How the data page is built
Method and sources
Housing age, tenure and building type
US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2020-2024 5-year estimates, by ZIP Code Tabulation Area, from api.census.gov. Fields: B25001_001 (housing units), B25034_001 and B25034_007 to _011 (all units, and units built 1979 or earlier, which gives the "built before 1980" share), B25034_002 to _004 (built 2000 or later), B25035_001 (median year built), B25003_001 and _003 (occupied, renter occupied), B25024_001, _006 to _009 and _010 (all units, units in buildings of 5 or more, mobile homes). We cover 64 ZCTAs in Orange, Seminole and Osceola counties; ZCTAs with fewer than 300 housing units are dropped. "Orlando's own ZIP codes" means the 30 ZIPs with an Orlando mailing address (328xx), which is wider than city limits. Shares across several ZIPs are weighted by housing units.
Flood insurance claims
OpenFEMA FIMA NFIP Redacted Claims (v3), filtered to county codes 12095 (Orange), 12117 (Seminole) and 12097 (Osceola). Fields: dateOfLoss, yearOfLoss, reportedZipCode, ratedFloodZone, netBuildingPaymentAmount, netContentsPaymentAmount. A claim counts toward a ZIP by its reported ZIP. "Ian claims" have a date of loss from September 27 to October 5, 2022; Milton (158 claims) uses October 8 to 14, 2024. These are flood policy claims only; wind and roof damage is claimed on homeowners policies and doesn't appear here.
Dew point
NOAA NCEI Global Summary of the Day for Orlando International Airport (72205012815), daily mean dew point, 1973 on. We count days with a mean dew point of 70°F or more, and the longest run of such days in each year. A year counts only with at least 340 days of data. Averages use 2016-2024, 1991-2020 and 1974-1990.
Rain
Daily precipitation (pcpn) at Orlando International Airport (GHCN USW00012815) via NOAA's Applied Climate Information System, 1952 through October 28, 2026. A trace counts as zero. Years with more than ten missing days are left out of averages. Monthly and yearly averages use 2016-2025 and 1991-2020.
Disaster declarations
OpenFEMA Disaster Declarations Summaries (v2) for Florida, county codes 095, 117 and 097, filtered to hurricanes, tropical storms, floods and severe storms, one row per disaster number.
Limits
Housing age tells you about a ZIP, not a house; plenty of 1965 houses have new roofs and well-sized AC, and plenty of 2015 ones don't. ACS figures are survey estimates with margins of error, larger in small ZIPs. One airport doesn't describe every street, and a few station years have gaps or odd readings (2008 is low). Flood claims only count homes with flood insurance. Nothing here is an inspection of any property, and we found no public dataset of mold complaints or licensed mold contractors by ZIP that we could publish.
Refresh
A job (pipeline/refresh.sh) re-pulls every source, rebuilds the site, and updates only when the derived data's hash changes. The date at the top of the data page moves only when that happens.
